Yosemite National Park, Tioga Pass Road, California, USA
Best Camping
If you didn’t book a campsite in Yosemite Valley in advance (Upper, Middle or Lower Pines Campgrounds), stick with the first-come-first-serve campgrounds along Highway 120, also known as Tioga Pass Road. Escape favorites include White Wolf, Yosemite Creek, and Tamarack Flat. Up on Glacier Point Road is another truly epic first-come campground named Bridalveil Creek. You can’t go wrong with any of these and, by staying here, you’ll avoid the madness that is Yosemite Valley. Read our camping tips for more information.
“The central valley of CA isn’t very attractive, however, if you go down the east side of the Sierra Nevada, along Highway 395, it’s stunning (you can see King’s Canyon – just not drive into it because the mountains are too steep), get to drive by Mt. Whitney (highest point in the continental US), Manzanar National Historic Site, Bodie State Park, and Death Valley National Park. And there’s less traffic and very open highways.”
Best Hike
Skip the tourist crowds as they head up the Nevada/Vernal Falls Trail and come DOWN it instead. Here’s the game plan: Leave your vehicle in Curry Village, take the free public transit bus to Glacier Point, jump out and hike back to your campervan via the Panorama Trail. Get an early start as this is a full day commitment. Bring lots of water, snacks and some sturdy shoes.
Best Side Trip
While there is a multitude of things to do in Yosemite Valley, driving about an hour south to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias provides a different–and equally rewarding–experience.
Yosemite Camping Highway 120 East
If you’re getting a late start (after lunch time or so) heading into Yosemite, Escape recommends grabbing a campsite just outside the park for a night and wading into the madness early the next morning. You’re now back in the high country, so campgrounds are plentiful and the weather will be perfect for car camping during the summer months. There’s a ton of worthy campgrounds just outside the entrance gates and you can’t really go wrong with any of them. While it is possible to boondock it along the many pullouts along this stretch of 120, we recommend you spend a few bucks, get a site, build a campfire, and enjoy a beer or two before heading into Yosemite and the inevitable gridlock tomorrow.
Best Camping 120 East of Yosemite: Big Bend and Big Springs are pretty cool. Down the hill and a few miles south of Lee Vining is June Lakes Loop, which has more campsites than we can count. We LOVE this area. See our Yosemite Camping Overview for more details.
6:00 am - 39.3 milles / 59 minuts - 7:00 am
Just up from the shores of Mono Lake, Lee Vining is the jump off point to head into the Sierras and Yosemite via Highway 120. Park it for a while as this is the last chance to gear up before you head east. Best Eats: Just to your left as you turn onto Highway 120, you’ll find the Tioga Gas Mart, better known to everyone else as the Whoa Nellie Deli. Pull over here and grab a fish taco or a burger and have a picnic on the grassy area out front. During summer months, you might even catch a live band playing for your enjoyment.

Bodie Ghost Town
About 20 miles (32 km) north of the town of Lee Vining, look for a sign signaling the road to Bodie (County Road 270, also known as Bodie Road to locals). This abandoned city is the most pristine ghost town in North America…maybe the world. During its heyday, Bodie was one of the largest communities in California. However, when the gold ran out in the mid-1890s, all residents seemed to pack up in a single afternoon, leaving all their worldly goods behind. Today, Bodie is in a state of what the Rangers call “Arrested Decay.” It’s fascinating to wander the overgrown streets of this ghost town.
Escape Tip
Bodie is a State Park and they keep regular park hours. Summer months (April to September) they’re open from 9 am to 6 pm. Winter months they’re open 9 am to 4 pm.
Warning
This is a maintained dirt road–but sometimes it ain’t so well maintained. Take it easy during this stretch of the drive. Remember, you are NOT covered under Escape Roadside Assistance while driving off paved roads. If the road isn’t well-maintained, the town of Bodie certainly is.

Camp Richardson Resort Beach, Jameson Beach Road, South Lake Tahoe, CA, USA
You will no doubt want to stop off at California's State Capital, Sacramento, en route to Lake Tahoe and our suggested campground, Historic Camp Richardson Resort & Marina, located on Lake Tahoe's Southwest Shore. You'll have a great time at this year round resort where miles of sandy beaches await the summer visitor and where everything from Seadoo and power boat rentals, to paddle boat and kayaks are available. Enjoy relaxing on the long stretch of beach, and enjoy the swimming area. Still looking for ways to add excitement? Try the Lake Tahoe Water-ski School, a sailing lesson, or soar 12,000 feet above the water while parasailing!
Escape Camper tip: It’s not a National Park, but it’s a nice way to loop back around to California. There are two main areas: North Tahoe and South Tahoe. Head to South Tahoe for casinos and pricey restaurants. Otherwise, North Tahoe is your place. It’s more laid back with better campgrounds (subjective opinion), beaches, and little communities that are more in line with the Escape crowd. Check out Truckee, Tahoe City, and Kings Beach if you’re looking for hip, welcoming mountain towns.

As you cruise up Highway 1, most people drive right through Elk. That’s a mistake. This little community of 250 brave souls is worth checking out. Do a beach hike and wander the streets but don’t expect gasoline because there isn’t a station. Just up the road is the more touristy town of Mendocino. We like both spots but Elk definitely won us over a long time ago.

There’s great fly fishing here, as well as natural hot spring pools at Kah-Nee-Ta. Once you make it to Smith Rock, you’ll find one of the best rock climbing meccas in the world, and one of our favorite hikes: Misery Ridge. You can camp cheaply at The Bivy, where you’ll find restrooms, showers, sinks, and more. For a $5 fee—paid to the Navajo Nation —you can drive the 17-mile loop taking you on a meandering path around the Monuments. Under normal conditions, this 2-hour drive is possible in an Escape Campervan. That said, the route is on an unimproved dirt road and you are NOT covered with Escape Roadside Assistance if you get stuck out there, especially during the rainy season. Tip submission from Mack:
If you drive through the Mojave Desert to get to Joshua tree beware there are no gas stations in the desert. Make sure to bring lots of water with you in the summer it gets crazy hot.
Skull Rock – Neat rock to check out right next to the road. It looks like a skull…
Ryan Mountain – Strenuous hike up the mountain but is definitely worth it to see while you are there. Probably my favorite hike from my trip there.
Lost Palms Oasis Trail – one way 3.7-mile (7.4 miles total) hike to some palm trees in the middle of a valley in the desert. It is a cool hike, a little long though.
Cholla Cactus Garden – Field of cactuses right next to the road so it is easy to get some parking and take a stroll through the cacti field. DON’T TOUCH the cacti they are very sharp even after they are dead.
Keys View – Beautiful view overlooking some mountains and the Salton Sea. Just a short drive to get there and there is a paved wheelchair accessible walkway to check out the views. Really cool! At one point in time it was possible to see Mexico but with today’s air quality it is a rare occurrence.
Kelso Sand Dunes – Saw these on the way to Joshua Tree. Didn’t have time to stop but it looked cool. Looks like people take their snowboards, skis, and sleds there to ride the dunes. It is in the middle of the Mojave so there are not a lot of people which is great.
